A tragic case in Berne, Indiana, left a 2-year-old girl dead after police say she was left overnight in a closet with a space heater turned nearly to its maximum. Authorities responding on November 27 reported an intense heat difference when entering the room where the child was found.
Inside the closet, investigators described a disturbing scene with trash, a soiled mattress, and extreme temperatures reaching over 108°F. The child’s body temperature was recorded at more than 109°F, and signs indicated she had been exposed to dangerous heat for a prolonged period.
Police say the parents admitted placing the toddler in the closet around 7 p.m. and not checking on her for over 18 hours. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as hyperthermia, and both parents now face serious criminal charges.
